Our Lands & Resources: Stewardship Rooted in Heritage

Chugach’s land entitlement includes approximately 378,000 acres of full fee estate—surface and subsurface ownership—and over 550,000 acres of subsurface estate, encompassing some of the most stunning and resource-rich areas that extend from the Kenai Peninsula, through Prince William Sound, and east of the lower Copper River Delta. These lands are not only critical to our identity—they are vital to our future.

For Chugach Alaska Corporation, land is our identity and our home. The coastlines, forests, rivers, and mountains of Southcentral Alaska are the ancestral homelands of our people, who have lived in harmony with these environments for more than 5,000 years. This deep cultural connection continues today through our stewardship of nearly one million acres of land entrusted to us under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

Our Communities

The Chugach region is home to the vibrant communities of Eyak (Cordova), Seward, Valdez, Tatitlek, Whittier, Port Graham, and Nanwalek. Rooted in rich traditions and a deep connection to the land and waters, our people carry forward a strong cultural heritage while building thriving, resilient communities for future generations.

Honoring the Land.
Empowering Our People.

For Chugach, land is vital to our culture. It represents identity, heritage, and the foundation of our future. Ownership of our lands is a pillar of Chugach’s mission statement and central to our 100-year vision: to steward these lands for the well-being of today’s shareholders and for generations yet to come.

Our approach is rooted in stewardship and intergenerational planning. From restoring salmon streams to protecting sacred sites, every decision is made with future generations in mind. By blending responsible development with cultural and environmental mindfulness, we ensure our lands remain a source of strength and resilience for centuries.

We do not sell our lands. Instead, we honor and protect them while creating opportunities that uplift our people. Every project and initiative is guided by balance, stimulating economic growth and local employment while safeguarding cultural resources, subsistence access, and the natural environment.

Partnership Opportunities

Chugach’s lands are a source of strength – not only for our people, but also for the future we are building together. Guided by our 100-year vision, we welcome partnerships that align with our values of stewardship, sustainability, and respect for culture.

Our lands hold opportunities for projects that create shared value, including:
