Village in the City will be a vibrant community cornerstone that integrates cultural heritage with innovative pathways to training, jobs, and housing for Alaska Native and Indigenous communities while welcoming the broader Anchorage population and visitors.

Location

Village in the City will be located on four acres in midtown Anchorage, directly east of 561 E. 36th Avenue, a major transportation corridor accessible by foot, bike, bus, and vehicle, and near Alaska’s largest tribal health system. The site can accommodate additional structures as needs grow.

Roles & Contributions

Chugach Alaska Corporation will partner with its nonprofits, Chugach Tribal Services,
and Chugach Museum, to bring Village In the City to life.

Offerings

Resource Hub

  • First Level: Multi-use space to be used for community gatherings, and career development programs.  Key elements include a public coffee kiosk, commercial kitchen, maker space, and retail space. 
  • Second Level: Program coordination rooms, computer lab, resource library, CTS offices, and flexible space for partner nonprofits.
  • Programs: Workforce development and apprenticeships, mentorships, resource navigation and program coordination.

The Chugach Museum (Within Village in the City)

  • Participatory Exhibits showcasing the Chugach region’s generational history, artifacts, and rich traditions—designed to celebrate and inspire future generations.
  • Cultural Programs & Archives bringing traditional knowledge to life for Anchorage residents, school groups, and visitors.
  • Eco-tourism that strengthens cultural tourism with immersive experiences rooted in the language, stories, and values of the Chugach region and its people.
  • Collection Stewardship caring for 2,000+ artifacts and archives in a climate-controlled open-source facility.

Wellness Program:

  • Multifunctional Wellness Facility: Holistic community wellness hub, integrating physical recreation with cultural and health programming.
  • Gymnasium & Event Space: 12,050 sq. ft. gym configurable into two full-size basketball courts, with retractable spectator seating and an integrated stage for versatile community use.
  • Fitness & Health Amenities: Dedicated cardio and weight training areas for daily exercise and fitness, plus consultation rooms for wellness counseling.
  • Multi-Use Performance Stage: integrated into the gymnasium, supporting cultural, educational, and community events.

Preliminary Housing Program

  • One building in Phase 1 and one in Phase 2: each with 32 units
