The Chugach people have lived and flourished in South Central Alaska for more than 5,000 years, and as a corporation, we have, with the hard work and dedication of our employees, built a strong and successful business during the last 45 years. The common denominator to our longevity as a tribe and as a company in the modern era is our Core Behaviors.

Whether in ancient times or today, we know our best work comes when we use the behaviors to make decisions. The Core Behaviors provide a pathway to excellence, productivity and integrity. This is how we created a home and a culture in one of the harshest environments in the world and how we distinguish ourselves in the world’s most competitive markets.

The Core Behaviors are, without a doubt, the tools to our success. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a tool as ‘an instrument or apparatus used in performing an operation or necessary in the practice of a profession.’ The dictionary further describes tool as ‘natural ability,’ meaning one ‘has all the tools to be a great practitioner.’

Our instruments and our natural ability reside in the Core Behaviors. They guide everything we do. Our tools are:

  • We do things the right way
  • We create meaningful value
  • We empower people
  • We build community
  • We leave things better than we found them

These five tools allow us to build great things. They provide our moral compass. They create confidence. They elevate us as a company and as individuals. They build and expand our societal foundation. They make the world a better place.

Our Core Behaviors are the Swiss-Army knife of sound-decision making, and they create better solutions for business and a workplace that is infused with care, compassion and competency.

This website, the heart of the Chugach community, will share our story through the lens of the Core Behaviors, especially and obviously, through our behavior of building community.
