Legends & Stories

This collection of legends and stories of the people of the Chugach Region touches the heart, spirit, and mind. The stories illustrate traditional beliefs and situations experienced by a unique people, blending elements of Yupik Eskimo, Aleut, Athabascan and Tlingit cultures. Republication of these stories helps foster awareness and a sense of place critical to continued self-esteem and identity as a people.

Many of these stories were collected by the first Danish-American Alaska Expedition of 1933. Read more about the contributions of our ancestors.
